Healthier Swaps to Make in The Kitchen…

Last Christmas we got an air fryer and let me tell you, if you haven’t experienced this amazing appliance, then you are missing out. You can create crispy “fried” foods without the use of fatty oils. SCORE! Buffalo chicken wings, sweet potato fries, crisp fish fillets all have been amazing things we’ve made with the air fryer without the addition of oils and excessive breading. It made me think, what else have I swapped, or could I swap to create a healthier alternative to my favorite meals? 

 

Healthy Swaps To Try

Plain Greek Yogurt over Sour Cream – Since I found this swap in college plain Greek yogurt has been my go-to alternative for sour cream in every dish. Tacos, baked potatoes, ranch dip and veggies, any and everything. The tangy, tartness of the Greek yogurt mimics that of sour cream but has less fat and more protein!

Spaghetti Squash and Zoodles over PastaYes, sometimes I absolutely need a large bowl of carbs covered in sauce. But for the most part, I love pouring my favorite pasta sauce over spaghetti squash or zoodles (zucchini noodles). When baked, spaghetti squash comes out stringy just like pasta and tastes great or look to a spiralizer and a fresh zucchini to create noodles out of! Both are amazing, and I promise you won’t miss all the heavy carbs.

Ground Turkey over Ground Beef/PorkA great alternative to fatty ground beef is a lean ground turkey. You can find ground turkey pretty much everywhere now. It’s easy to brown and make up as you would ground beef for any recipe. Create amazing chili, casseroles, or even hamburger patties with the lean alternative for a great, healthy meal!

Mashed Bananas over Baking FatsInstead of butter or oil you can directly substitute mashed bananas in most of your baking recipes. This can greatly reduce the fat and sugar content of some of your favorite sweet treats. And no, it does not give the treats an overwhelming banana taste, I promise!

Remember a healthy diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer, along with other diseases. Life is all about balance.
