Health Benefits of Alkaline Foods…

We all are aware of the good foods and bad foods. But what makes good foods healthy and what makes bad foods unhealthy? Well, let’s take a dive into the science behind healthfulness and what the health benefits of eating alkaline foods are for you.

Breaking down the science behind what alkaline means when it comes to your body can be somewhat confusing. But when it comes to our bodies, there are many factors that makes up the different components of our bodies and allow our bodies to work properly, but the main on is pH levels. The pH stands for “Potential of Hydration” and measures the hydrogen ions within our bodies. The more ions one’s body has, the more acidic their body is, and the less ions they have the more Alkaline (or basic) their bodies are.

Well, our bodies work on a very particular pH range, which is around 7.365 according to This number leans slightly more towards the alkalinity side of the spectrum. One of the most important parts to achieve alkalinity is to protect our blood. If our pH levels ever shift towards the acidic side of the spectrum (0-6), creates distress signals in our body.

To maintain alkalinity, our kidneys do all the work. They filter out any excessive acids in our system to keep our body at the right pH levels. But if we consume to many acid-forming foods, or ‘bad’ foods, our kidneys can’t always keep up. When our kidneys can’t keep up, the acid waste starts to form in our tissues which can lead to a variety of health conditions such as breast cancer.

Knowing what foods can be causing acid waste in your body is extremely important because while most people think bad foods are related to greasy, fried foods, you might be surprised at the list of foods that are considered acid-forming foods..

  • Meat, fish, shellfish
  • Dairy Products – milk, eggs, butter and cheese
  • Sugary Drinks – coffee, soda and alcohol
  • Processed and refined foods
  • MSG
  • Canned foods

Consuming too many acid-forming foods, causes a lot of stress on our bodies to try and detoxify and neutralize those acids before they begin to basically poison our bodies. So, what foods can you be eating that are ‘healthy’ foods and are considered alkaline foods?

  • All vegetables – raw is best
  • Leafy Greens – spinach, lettuce, broccoli, and kale
  • Pumpkins
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Beets
  • Mushrooms
  • Nuts & Seeds – coconut, almonds, and chia
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Ginger & Turmeric
  • Wheat and Barley Grass
  • Fresh beans, green peas, and lima beans

While these foods help reduce acid waste from building up in your body, that doesn’t mean you should eat ONLY alkaline foods. It’s commonly advised that we should strive for the 80/20 rule. 80% alkaline foods and 20% acid-forming foods.

Learning to adopt these food changes can be hard but remembering to treat your body right and provide it healthy foods is key in reducing your risk for breast cancer and other diseases. And always remember to read the ingredients in the foods you eat, you might be surprised exactly what is in your “healthy” foods!
