I was diagnosed August 30th, 2018 with inflammatory stage 3C breast cancer and am currently undergoing chemotherapy. I had no history of breast cancer on my mother’s side and even had routine mammograms, including one 2 months prior I noticed my breasts swelling.

One of the hardest parts of my breast cancer journey is having to go through the different treatments. I first have to undergo chemotherapy, then have surgery, and then endure radiation and then go through surgery again. So, this is going to be a long journey needless to say.

I have a hard time knowing that I have to put my loving husband and 2 little boys through this long journey with me. Breast cancer doesn’t just affect me, it affects all my loved ones around me. But they have been some of my biggest joys, along with my Whalens Warriors, a group that has come together to show me their support. I even started a blog to help me stay positive named after my Whalen Warriors!  With a long treatment process, I’ve taken to blogging to get the demons out of my head so I can focus on moving forward. Failure is not an option.

I’ve also learned to name the drugs something positive to help me, instead of the “red devil”, I named it Prada, like the Devil Wears Prada movie. She is helping me beat this, and once I finished with her, I treated myself to a Prada bag from the outlets!

Each journey is different. So, if I could encourage any woman going through this battle, be sure to fight! And don’t be afraid to ask for help and not hold back when you need it. And for those family members, be there as a support system and don’t hold them back from doing certain things just because they have cancer. Having cancer, we want to feel as normal as possible. But remember, you are a WARRIOR!
