Let’s face it, we’re all stuck inside with this COVID-19 crisis going on.  Eating is a coping mechanism and many people have the tendency to find ‘comfort’ in junk food.  But this whole epidemic should be an eye-opening time for us all about our health and just how much we need to take care of ourselves (especially in preventative measures).  So, while you’re sitting at home, looking for meals to make and experiment with, take a look at iGoPink’s Healthy Grocery Shopping List and have the family get involved.  Let the kids pick out their favorite items on the list and cook together and start incorporating these healthy foods into your diet more often!

Eat A Plant!

That’s what we say at iGoPink every day.  Very rarely (unless you’re deep frying the items) you can’t go wrong with plants—veggies and fruits.  Look at the list.  They are rich in anti-oxidants and filled with folates and nutritional value that truly can’t be found in other places!

Some of our favorite examples:

  • Broccoli
  • Orange Juice
  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Beans
  • Blueberries

Spice it Up!

If you cook at all, you probably use garlic just as often as you use water to boil pasta.  Garlic is in everything and is a great ‘add on’ to cooking that has cancer fighting elements in it.  One of the most talked about ‘spices’ is turmeric.  First of all…it turns ALL your food a dark yellow color, but don’t be afraid, the cancer fighting health benefits in it are AMAZING!  Read this great article from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center about turmeric’s benefits:

Vitamin D!

Load up your shopping card with any and all things Vitamin D.  The health benefits with regards to cancer fighting foods is amazing. Some of the basic ways you can cook and incorporate vitamin D into your diet includes:

  • Tuna/Salmon
  • Fortified foods with Vitamin D: from orange juice to cereal
  • Cheese (in moderation due to the fat content)
  • Eggs

So while you’re COVID-19 bound at home, experiment with foods that contain these wonderful health benefits that can help to prevent cancer (not just breast cancer, but many cancers.)  It’s a time in our society to take action on our preventative health and what better way to do it than with these great tasting foods!
