Exercise…always one of the key things we talk about at The Breast Cancer Charities of America and how important it is in the overall lifestyle components of health needed to prevent and survive breast cancer. But, exercise can be difficult for any of us to fit it. Work. Being a mom, wife, sister, friend…exercise can be the item that gets put out. But one of my joys has always been my puppies; our great danes! And talk about exercise!
The better question is, do I exercise my Great Dane or does he exercise me? I have a 3 year old Blue Merle great dane named Blue. Part of having a great dane is exercising them; and a lot. Well the difference here is that Blue really exercises me!!
Blue weighs about 150 pounds, soooooo, walking him really consists of him pulling me all over the neighborhood! Lol. However, it is a really good workout for me as I have to use all my strength in my arms and back to hold on to him, and use my legs and core to keep him from dragging me on my face!
I typically only walk him about 3 days a week because it takes me the rest of that day and the next, to recuperate. But something as simple as walking a dog is the perfect refresher to my body and my mind. It makes me focus on a four legged being that relies on me to walk him to stay health. Little does he know that he’s also keeping me healthy at the same time.
So when it comes to working out and finding time to exercise, the choice is yours…we are all busy but take a look around you. Maybe its spending time with your kids as they ride their bike and you walk along with them or maybe you also buy a bike and join in with them. Sometimes those simple, nostalgic and family (or fur-baby) times, are the ones that truly make the whole body happy and healthy.
But a bit of wisdom to anyone out there looking at a GREAT Dane, remember they get their name GREAT from two beings…one, they are great. I can’t imagine my life (and weekly walks) without my Great Danes. But secondly they are GREAT, and big in size. Great Danes require a lot of exercise and activity, therefore, always think twice before becoming a parent to one, it definitely is not an easy job, BUT they reward you well with lots of sloppy kisses and snuggles!!
