Fitness Friday: Travel Edition

Recently, I have been scrolling through my social media accounts and seeing a lot of my friends taking their summer vacations, and let’s be real…I’m having some severe jealously! Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be laying on a beach in Cancun, Mexico sipping on an ice-cold beverage with the warm sun on my skin.

But, do you ever think about how to get your physical activity in while on vacations? That is one thing we always seem to neglect, because it’s a vacation, right?! Who exercises on vacation?! Even though you are on vacation, physical activity is still important to include during your day. However, including exercise during your vacation days doesn’t have to be boring or a hassle. You can do normal touristy things that people like to do while on vacation and increase your heart rate at the same time.

So, since it is Fitness Friday and during the peak of summer vacation time, I think this is a perfect opportunity to discuss how to get in those much-needed minutes of physical activity. More than 60% of women do NOT receive the recommended amount of physical activity. But, did you know that physically active women have a reduced chance of getting breast cancer?! What better reason to make sure you are being physically active?

I travel to California quite often to visit my sister, and when I do, I love doing things during the day that I can count towards my daily physical activity. One of my favorite activities to do is site see, and my favorite way to do that is by doing fun and adventurous hikes!

My most memorable and exciting experience was when we hiked up to Potato Chip Rock up the Mt. Woodson trails. The trail is 8 miles round trip and goes up to 1700 feet elevation, so all the way to Potato Chip Rock is at an uphill slope (good for working those glute muscles). The hike was extremely hard, but well worth it once you experience the amazing view from the top.

How awesome was it that not only did I get to experience one of the most beautiful sights, but also got more than enough physically activity in for the day while having the time of my life laughing and playing around with my friends and family. Vacations are supposed to be fun and exciting, but you also need to take care of your health. There are so many ways to keep yourself active, even in unknown and foreign places.
